Root Canals

Teeth die, this is a fact and part of our training is to mummify dead teeth so that you can continue to use them. The root canal runs down the centre of the tooth. There are up to four root canals in molar teeth, a couple in premolars and usually only one in front teeth. Due to trauma, decay or large restorations the pulp within the root canal, which supplies the tooth with it's blood and nerve supply dies. This can be slow and relatively painless or can be sharp shooting and excruciating. If left there will often be pain and swelling in the area of the affected tooth. We open up the tooth. Clean out the debris, ensure that the canal is cleaned over a couple of visits and then fill the canal. There are tried and tested materials for filling the root canal. We will continue to investigate the most biocompatible materials available for your use. It is our belief that root fillings are not for everyone. People who have a poor immune system, multiple allergies or are just plain run down may not do well with this treatment and extraction may be the best option. You can discuss this with your dentist.

Extractions

Teeth have to come out sometimes. We offer this under local anaesthesia or conscious sedation. For those who are nervous, some form of sedation can make the visit less stressful.
